A Season of Renewal & Celebration Welcome to the Bernards-Ridge edition of our April issue! As the days grow longer and the sunshine begins to warm our neighborhoods again, spring brings with it a wonderful sense of renewal. After the quiet of winter, there is a new energy in the air. People are getting outside, gathering with friends and family, and enjoying everything our communities have to o er. This season is especially meaningful to me personally. This year, Mother’s Day will be a particularly special celebration in my family, as both of my daughters have recently become mothers themselves. Becoming a grandmother has been such a joyful and emotional milestone. Watching my daughters step into motherhood and seeing the bond that is already forming with the next generation reminds me just how powerful and beautiful family connections truly are. Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate those bonds, whether it’s sharing a special brunch or dinner, finding the perfect gift at a local boutique, or giving the special women in your life a day of well-deserved pampering at one of our wonderful local salons and spas. Throughout this issue, you’ll find many local businesses ready to help you make the day truly memorable. We are also proud to feature our Women-Owned Business Directory, highlighting the incredible women who have built, nurtured, and grown businesses right here in our own neighborhoods. As a woman business owner myself, I know firsthand the dedication, perseverance, and passion it takes to build something meaningful. Supporting these businesses means supporting families, dreams, and the strength of our local community. In addition, this issue includes our Houses of Worship: Faith, Hope & Joy section, o ering readers a place to connect with churches and services during the Easter season. For many, this is a meaningful time of reflection, faith, and gathering with loved ones. Our current cover features Trunkspace, a watercolor painting by Margaret Fanning. The piece captures a candid moment of two young girls laughing in the trunk of their father’s car, a scene inspired by the artist’s own childhood memories. It beautifully evokes a sense of wonder and a simpler time that many of us can recall. In this issue, we invite you to read our Health Hotline feature by Dr. Vincent Sferra of Natural Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Sferra explores the vital connection between physical fitness and metabolic health, explaining how these mutually reinforcing components influence energy levels, cognitive health, and long-term quality of life. This spring, get outside, enjoy the sunshine, explore your community, and support the wonderful local businesses that make it thrive. Stay local - and #TellThemWeSentYou! Wishing you a beautiful spring and a very Happy Mother’s Day. All the best, Anna Petro Publisher, The Connection Magazine A Note From Our Publisher... Current implementation and expansion of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) and mid-term elections are front and center. I hope your tax season was stress-free, though of course some will require extensions. Individuals are enjoying the benefits of the OBBBA, including a more generous standard deduction, along with the supplemental senior standard deduction. This continues the trend of fewer taxpayers itemizing deductions and instead claiming the standard amount. This reduces the benefits of mortgage interest and other itemized elements. In turn, this diminishes the tax benefits of homeownership, adding to the affordability issue. Which is most acute for first-time buyers. Not surprisingly, many clients inquire how best to structure finances to help the next generation afford their first home. Perhaps the increased state tax itemized deductions will slow this trend, particularly in the tri-state area. A valuable deduction for businesses is the immediate expense provisions. This should serve to increase investment across the board. For successful pass-through business owners, the 20% Qualified Business Income deduction can result in significant savings, as the deduction is typically against the taxpayer’s marginal (top) tax rate. Business and individual taxpayers should focus on how the new positive tax provisions of the OBBBA will be implemented Whatever the administration or tax policy, we stand ready to help our clients plan and adapt to the best possible financial outcomes. and how best to leverage them in the future to achieve business and personal economic goals. Although the provisions of the OBBBA were made permanent, the reality, of course, is that no tax provision is truly permanent. Any current tax law change will require the support of President Trump and the Republicans who control the House and Senate. However, this is a slim balance of power. This majority will be tested in the upcoming midterm elections. Under House of Representatives (House) rules, a simple majority vote is required to pass legislation, and all seats are up for election every 2 years. One-third of Senate seats are up for election every 2 years. Republicans currently hold a 219 to 213 advantage in the House and a 53 to 47 advantage in the Senate. Using history as a guide, the upcoming midterm elections have not been kind to the incumbent president. According to The American Presidency Project, Univ CA, since 1982, the party that controlled the White House in the last eleven 4-year mid-term elections has lost a cumulative 233 House seats and 32 Senate seats. Since 1982, only 1 Republican and 1 Democratic president gained seats, respectively, the last was in 2002. Opinion, if prior history is to repeat itself, the party that controls the executive branch will have difficulty maintaining the majority in both arms of Congress. If bipartisan support is needed, passing significant tax legislation would be unlikely. I cannot recall many financial issues with the support of both Democrats and Republicans alike. Whatever the administration or tax policy, we stand ready to help our clients plan and adapt to the best possible financial outcomes. THE BERNARDS-RIDGE CONNECTION PAGE 11 APRIL/MAY 2026 theconnectionsnj.com HOLY CROSS CEMETERY & MAUSOLEUM OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP PARISH 145 Mount Airy Rd. | Basking Ridge, NJ 07920 (908) 766-0079 | www.holycrosscem.com or more than 100 years, families throughout the Somerset Hills have placed their trust in Holy Cross Cemetery as a peaceful resting place for their loved ones. Before Holy Cross opened in 1924, Catholic families in the area relied on cemeteries that were nearly a two-hour round trip from Bernardsville. The community needed a cemetery closer to home. In early 1923, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Bernardsville began exploring the purchase of a 22-acre property owned by William and Ellen Ryan. By October of that year, the parish received state approval to establish a cemetery, and the land was officially acquired. The first burials took place on Sunday, April 27, 1924, when mourners gathered to lay to rest Miss Maud L. Drummond, Mrs. Henry Lawer (Agnes), and Miss Marion K. Boudrean. Stewardship Rooted in Tradition For a century, Holy Cross Cemetery has been more than a final resting place. It has been a reflection of the values of the community it serves. Each generation has entrusted the cemetery with preserving memories, honoring faith traditions, and maintaining a space of dignity and respect. That responsibility continues today through thoughtful planning, careful maintenance, and a commitment to serving families with compassion and understanding at every stage of need. A Peaceful Setting for Generations Today, Holy Cross Cemetery continues its mission of compassionate service to families in Somerset Hills and the surrounding communities. Visitors often share how peaceful and welcoming the cemetery feels—a reflection of both the natural beauty of the grounds and the care provided by our dedicated team. Conveniently located off I-287 and Mount Airy Road, the surroundings are embraced on all sides by forest. In spring, vibrant azaleas, forsythia, and flowering shrubs brighten the landscape, bringing the grounds to life with color. Our staff maintains the cemetery yearround, ensuring a serene and respectful environment every season. Recent improvements include the large cross at our entrance and a new informational kiosk featuring helpful resources, quarterly clean-up dates and a map. Burial Options for Every Family Holy Cross Cemetery offers a full range of interment choices to meet a variety of needs and preferences with options available for a range of budgets and family preferences. • Traditional ground plots • Two mausoleums with single and true-companion crypts • Marble and glass niches • A tranquil Columbarium Garden for cremations • Reserved space on our perimeter for individual family mausoleums The cemetery is open daily from dawn to dusk, with interments scheduled Monday through Saturday mornings. To help visitors locate loved ones, our website includes an online burial locator, and our front-entrance kiosk provides a convenient Walk-to-Site QR code. You Are Welcome Here We invite you to visit Holy Cross Cemetery to experience its peaceful surroundings for yourself. THE BERNARDS-RIDGE CONNECTION PAGE 12 APRIL/MAY 2026 theconnectionsnj.com recent New Jersey appellate decision demonstrates that the courts are ready to treat the misuse of modern technology such as Bluetooth trackers, GPS devices, and hidden audio recorders with the same seriousness as more traditional forms of abuse. The case involved a father who sought a restraining order against his child’s mother after discovering she secretly placed a listening device and a Bluetooth tracker in their twoyear-old’s bag. A private investigator working on the mother’s behalf had also attached a GPS tracker to the father’s car. The mother did not deny any of this. Instead, she maintained that her purpose was to ensure the child’s safety during the father’s parenting time. The trial court sided with the mother, concluding that because she had not intended to harass the father, and had not wanted him to discover the devices at all, her actions did not rise to the level of domestic violence. The court also found that the father had not shown the mother was trying to follow him or cause him harm. The father appealed and the Appellate Division firmly disagreed with the lower court’s reasoning. The appellate panel found that the trial court misapplied the law in several important respects. Most significantly, the court held that the legal standard for stalking does not focus on what the person planting the device subjectively intended. Rather, it asks whether the conduct, viewed objectively, would cause a reasonable person to fear for their safety or suffer emotional distress. The secret and repeated use of tracking and recording devices, the court concluded, is precisely the kind of behavior the stalking statute was designed to address. The appellate court also pointed to New Jersey’s 2024 amendment to its domestic violence statute, which now includes “coercive control” as a factor courts must consider when deciding whether to issue a restraining order. Among the behaviors that can constitute coercive control are monitoring another person’s movements, communications or daily behavior. Adding further weight to the father’s claims, the record showed that after the first Bluetooth tracker was discovered, his attorney had sent a letter warning the mother to stop tracking him. She continued anyway. The appellate court found this was strong evidence of a deliberate course of harassing conduct. The case was sent back to the trial court for a new hearing before a different judge, with the appellate panel having already determined that the predicate acts of harassment and stalking had been established. For anyone navigating a high-conflict separation or custody dispute, this decision is an important reminder that the law is evolving alongside technology. Devices that are marketed for convenience-finding lost keys or luggage-can become instruments of surveillance and control. New Jersey courts have made clear that secretly tracking or recording a co-parent is not a legitimate safety measure and may be considered domestic violence. If you have concerns about your own situation, consulting a knowledgeable family law attorney is the most important first step you can take. That trade-off can be part of the strategy, especially when anticipating tax law changes. Each spouse can create a SLAT for the other but be careful to avoid the so-called “Reciprocal Trust Doctrine,” which if successfully advanced by the IRS, could render the trusts ineffective. High-net-worth individuals and families often find that basic wills and beneficiary designations fall short of assuring tax efficiency, asset protection, and multi-generational wealth transfer. Concerns about avoiding unnecessary estate taxes, protecting assets for children, and seeking structures beyond a simple trust often point to the need to explore more advanced planning strategies. FAQ #1: How does a Dynasty Trust work? A Dynasty Trust is designed to hold wealth and pass it across multiple generations while minimizing transfer taxes. Instead of passing outright to heirs, assets remain in a trust that can benefit children, grandchildren, and beyond. Owned by the trust rather than any individual, assets may also receive a layer of protection from creditors or certain legal claims, such as divorce proceedings. Typically irrevocable, these trusts require their own tax identification number and filings. They can be managed by a family member, a professional trustee or bank, or a combination of both, if the donor believes the beneficiary may not handle the money appropriately. Federal estate and gift tax exemptions are currently historically high (up to $15 million per person). In some states the length of trusts is limited; in others, they Complex financial lives require complex planning. can continue for generations. In New Jersey, dynasty trusts (always irrevocable and perpetual) can last indefinitely. FAQ #2: How do a Charitable Lead Trust and a Charitable Remainder Trust differ? Both structures combine philanthropic goals with financial planning, but reverse who benefits first. • Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT): The individual or family receives an annual payment from the trust for a defined period; the remaining assets go to charity at the end of the period. • Charitable Lead Trust (CLT): The charity receives income for a set term; the remaining assets pass to heirs or other beneficiaries. With this timing difference, tax treatment and planning uses vary. CRTs can combine income tax deferral with philanthropic goals; CLTs can accomplish wealth-transfer strategies and accelerate large income tax charitable deductions. FAQ #3: How does a SLAT work? A Spousal Lifetime Access Trust (SLAT) is an irrevocable trust created by one spouse to benefit the other. Assets transferred into SLAT are generally from the donor spouse’s taxable estate, plus future appreciation. During the beneficiary spouse’s lifetime, distributions may be made to that spouse and other beneficiaries, typically descendants, indirectly supporting the household. Afterward, remaining assets can be passed on to children or other chosen beneficiaries. CREATIVECORNER Spring Knitting By Carolyn Hanson All of the pieces here are top-down construction, meaning there are no seams needed to attach the front to the back, or to insert the sleeves. A big plus! When you are done knitting, you are ready to wear. Another advantage…it can be tried on as you go. A disadvantage… there is a lot more frogging (Rip-it, Rip-it..haha) to fix a mistake since front, back and sleeves are connected. So, fix yoke mistakes early. Wraps are always fun. They can be worn as a scarf or drop around shoulders. One of my favorites is the Phiaro Scarf by Katie Himmelberg. This scarf starts off by knitting in the round using any non-wool fiber, cotton, bamboo or linen. The transformation from a simple stockinette tube to this beautiful wrap with brained fringe is stunning. The Osaka Scarf by ITO Yarn and Design is another simple stockinette piece. This one uses 5 skeins of silk mohair. Cast on and knit until the skein is finished, then switch to the next color and do the same. My version was enhanced with geometric designs before and after completing the piece. I used striping, intarsia and duplicate stitching to create an asymmetric interest. All patterns are available on Ravelry.com. ime to shed the scarves, wool hats and heavy sweaters-spring is finally here! What to make? Transitional pieces like short sleeve tees and tops, lightweight vests, lightweight cardigans, wraps and purses. Switch fibers from heavy wools to lightweight merino, cottons, linen, bamboo and silk. For short sleeve tees, try the Sea Glass Tee by Wool and Pine. This is a great stash buster project made with fingering yarn/sock yarn and as many or as few colors and materials as available. My version used sock yarn, cashmere, silk mohair, and lightweight merino wools in a pink/gold/cream color palette. I randomly chose 2 colors from one basket, knitted 2 rows alternating colors every other stitch. It’s comfortable and great for cool spring days or under a jean jacket. Another is Cumulus Tee by PetiteKnit. Love the V-neckline on this simple tee. Comfortable and easy wearing. Many sizes from XXL to 5XL. Made with silk and linen. Neck and sleeves have an i-cord edge. This one is on my list for spring. A favorite spring vest is Sauve by Woolfolk Design Team. The yarn is merino and linen. It can be worn over a tee or as a sleeveless top. If a longer version is preferred, it’s easy to add length. The armhole, neck and bottom are ribbed. The placard is picked up and double knit with buttonholes. For a lightweight cardigan, Junie by Audrey Borrego is a go to piece. Knit with a lightweight merino wool. The lace design accentuates the sleeves and bottom edge. This version repeated the design fully around the bottom, rather than just the sides. Love when makers enhance the pattern. T

At Spoon + Salt, we love helping hosts bring their vision to life—whether through full tabletop rental or design inspiration. This spring, gather your people, and let us help you set the table with intention, and enjoy every moment around it. pring offers us an invitation…an invitation to slow down, gather, and celebrate around the table. Whether you’re hosting a holiday gathering, a birthday party, a wedding or bridal shower, or simply a gathering with friends – a thoughtfully set table instantly elevates the experience. At Spoon + Salt, we believe a beautiful table doesn’t have to feel intimidating. With a few intentional choices, you can create a spring tablescape that feels fresh, welcoming, and personal. Here are some ideas to get started! Start by thoughtfully establishing your vision Before selecting a single piece, decide how you want the gathering to feel. Is it relaxed and casual, or polished and formal? Let that mood guide your choices—from plates and flatware to glassware and linens. When everything aligns with the overall vibe, the table feels cohesive and effortless rather than over styled. Set the mood with lighting Lighting is often overlooked, but it’s one of the fastest ways to transform a table. Soft, warm light creates an inviting atmosphere, especially as daylight fades. Rechargeable lamps are having a major moment—they’re cordless, versatile, and perfect for both indoor and outdoor tables. Mix them with candles for an effortless glow. CONNECTION COMMENDS Play with height to add interest A dynamic table has layers. When styling centerpieces, think in varying heights— low florals paired with taper candles, petite bud vases alongside taller arrangements, or stacked elements that draw the eye upward. The key is balance: enough variation to create visual interest without blocking conversation. Don’t be afraid to break tradition Spring is the perfect season to experiment. One of our favorite design approaches is pattern on pattern—especially when everything lives within the same color family. Floral linens paired with patterned napkins or textured chargers can feel cohesive and playful when the palette is intentional. Have fun with napkin folding Napkins are a small detail that make a big impact. A simple fold, a loose knot, or a tucked sprig of greenery can instantly elevate each place setting. This is an easy way to add personality without a lot of effort. Personalize each place setting Name cards or printed menus at each setting make guests feel seen and welcomed. We especially love the unexpected design of a name embossed onto a ribbon and then tied around the stem of a wine glass. These thoughtful touches turn a meal into an experience and are perfect for spring celebrations of all kinds. Bring the outdoors in Finally, lean into what’s local and in season. What I loved finding out was that their inspiration came not from celebrities, Tik Tokers or Couture brands; but from the people and world directly around them. For Roxie, her older sister’s style helped inspire her to seek a look of her own; for Sarah, her mom works in print media. Praise for the sustainability and shelf life of print media-something obviously front and center for a magazine like this. Drawing inspiration from their everyday lives, and a chance encounter with “The Anchor” (one of the oldest student newspapers in the country) inspired them to forge their own. In closing, I asked them where they wanted to see fashion go. And in their answers the two core values of A La Mode were made loud and clear. 1) This is for everyone. 2) Sustainability is paramount. Let’s break that down. 1. Fashion is for everyone; without it we lose the power of individuality and we stop caring. You don’t need a lot of money or access to the latest runway pieces to be “A La Mode”. Sometimes all you need is a piece you love, confidence and a smile! 2. There’s so much junk out there. From cheap fabrics bleeding microplastics into your skin to state-sized landfills filled with clothing less than a year old, sustainability must be upheld if we want to keep this little place called Earth spinning. In short, buy less, buy better and wear them well. Sometimes people are stubborn, I’m stubborn! (I’m Italian American with an Aries Zodiac; I truly can’t help it.) But the time we lower our veil of stubbornness is the time we get truly inspired. And talking with Roxie and Sarah was truly inspiring. If you get anything from this article, or from A La Mode itself, I think it should be this. Don’t knock Gen Z, they care more than you think, and work just as hard as we do. And that fills me with hope for our future and will hopefully fill pages of magazines for years to come. rowing up in the late 90’s (don’t google how old that makes me), 90% of my entertainment and learning came from print. TV and computers were luxuries. Nowadays the average household has a minimum of 3-4 screens per person. And that’s disheartening. It’s easy to read these opening sentences and assume that the primary culprit is Gen Z. But boy was I proved wrong when I met Roxie and Sarah from A La Mode. What is A La Mode? A La Mode is an exclusively print fashion magazine available only through Watchung Hills Regional High School. It is produced, shot and printed by high school students, with Roxie and Sarah at the helm. What began as a dream in 2023 for these entrepreneurs, has now become a reality with a staff of 30-50 students producing a full-fledged publication-with no backing from the Board of Ed. Talk about hustle! The thing I love about A La Mode’s concept is that it’s so much more than a magazine. Roxie and Sarah have used their platform as a way to foster community events in their high school. They have advertised their thrift shop fundraiser, in which students bought gently used clothing, which was a huge success, and got students excited to experience the sustainable side of fashion. I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand people who don’t care. Their brush-off attitude is exactly the kind of thing frying our brains. So, during my brief chat with Roxie and Sarah, I was surprised and delighted to see how much they cared not only about STYLE. PRINT. PURPOSE Fashion, Sustainability and the Power of Print By David J. Marzano Manager, Adams Fine Clothing and Tuxedo The thing I love about A La Mode’s concept is that it’s so much more than a magazine. G

The West Oak Team combines hyper-local expertise with the kind of genuine, personal care that makes all the difference when it matters most. When you work with the West Oak Team, you get more than an agent — you get people who know your neighborhood, care about your outcome, and stay with you every step of the way. Founded by Marie Young, the West Oak Team at Coldwell Banker Realty is a group of equal partners who each bring deep local knowledge, professional expertise, and a genuinely warm approach to every client relationship. Whether you're selling the home you've lived in for decades or finding the right place to start fresh, this team meets you exactly where you are. Most clients work closely with one agent — when it makes sense, team members naturally collaborate, bringing in a partner whose skills or connections are the right fit for the moment. It's flexible, client-first, and never transactional. Their roots in the Basking Ridge community run deep. They know the schools, the streets, the market nuances that only come from years of actually being here. That local fluency — combined with multilingual representation, expert staging, and strategic marketing — means clients go into every decision informed and confident. The results speak clearly: 83 closings and $70 million in sales volume in 2025 alone. They have been the top team in the office since inception. But what clients remember most isn't the number — it's the calm, the clarity, and the feeling that someone truly had their back. "The right support at the right moment — this is where we excel."
